The technical standard “ABNT NBR 10151 – Evaluation of Noise in Inhabited Areas, Aiming at Community Comfort” is the Brazilian standard that establishes the required conditions for the assessment of noise acceptability in communities, regardless of the existence of complaints.
This standard specifies the methodology for measuring noise levels both outside and inside buildings. For external environments, it also specifies noise levels during daytime and nighttime, according to the area in which the building is located and based on the evaluation of municipal zoning, in order to identify if the noise level exceeds the allowed limit for that location.
Noise pollution can be considered an environmental crime, and it is necessary to provide evidence that noise levels are potentially or effectively harmful to human health. Therefore, a Technical Report must be presented to prove or disprove this condition.
