E-Discovery is a procedure used by parties in a legal dispute with the goal of collecting, organizing, and presenting relevant information for the case. In terms of objectives, there are similarities between e-Discovery and Computer Forensics, however, one of the main differences lies in the depth with which information of interest is sought. In the former, each party seeks clearly visible information and metadata, while the latter uses specialized professionals, methods, and tools to locate hidden, scattered, or complex technical interpretation-dependent data. Thus, in general terms, e-Discovery deals with clearly visible information while Computer Forensics focuses on analyzing elements that require technical knowledge and are not obvious to the average observer.
